HOW IS A CONCRETE COUNTERTOP CREATED?
<< Previous FAQ Next FAQ >>

This process reveals the random distribution of the aggregate making each piece one of a kind.

There are many different ways that concrete is fabricated. The Concrete Reality countertop is the result of aesthetic choices and mix designs favoring a smooth, dense, durable surface.

First a mixture including Portland cement, sand, gravel and pigments is cast face down in a custom built form.

The aesthetic is earthy. Pores are found in the face of the concrete after the casting is turned over. These are filled with pigmented mixes that can dramatically change the appearance of the base color. They can contrast or blend in to compliment the base color.

The concrete is ground with diamond stone abrasives and water. This removes the hardened cement paste that is on the surface and reveals the visual texture of smoothly ground sand grains and small pieces of aggregate. This process reveals the random distribution of the aggregate making each piece one of a kind.

After several rounds of filling & grinding with progressively finer diamond grits, the tops are sealed with a food-safe heavy-duty sealer that has a durability rating for use on concrete driveways. A final step- a hand-rubbed carnuba wax finish gives the piece a softer luster.
